German Adventures, Day 8 - Neuschwanstein

On day 8 we set out in the rental car, driving cross country to see probably the most famous site in all of Bavaria, Schloss Neuschwanstein. It is the most incredible castle, the model for Disney's Cinderella Castle. On the way, we stopped at the lovely Wieskirche, which was built to house the statue of the scourged Savior that was actually declared a bonifide miracle when tears were found on it in the 1700s.

The tearful Jesus

The day was full of amazing scenery.

In the same area as Neuschwanstein Castle is the beautiful Schloss Hohenschwangau, King Ludwig II's childhood home. While the others were touring the inside of Neuschwanstein (I did this in 2007), I walked up to Hohenschwangau to get a closer view. It's mustardy yellow color makes it stand out even on such a gray day, and it's really cool looking. I didn't get to see as much of it as I wanted, but enjoyed it nonetheless.
Of course, nothing compared to actually seeing Schloss Neuschwanstein. We made our way to the Marienbrucke, which is where you get the best (postcard) views of the castle. Even in the cool rain, the castle did not disappoint. It's gorgeous!

We had a great time seeing the castles, but the day wasn't over yet. We headed off to see the Ottobeuren Abbey, an amazingly beautiful church with one of the most richly ornate interiors we saw on this trip. By this time the sun had come out and it was a brilliant afternoon. Too bad the sun wasn't out at Neuchwanstein!
Not sure why they decorate with skeletons, though!
